Our latest product, the Coanda classifier will give its world première at the 2024 IFAT environmental flagship fair. It sets new standards in terms of separation efficiency and compact design. Coanda classifiers can be installed on top of an existing or planned conveyor belt without any problem and without requiring any construction effort on the customer's part. Simple (but) ingenious: Having been patented for airstream sorting, the Coanda effect will lift up input material almost magically for reliable separation even in case of material overlay and under difficult conditions. Combined with its low requirements in terms of power and air, the Coanda classifier raises airstream sorting to a new level.

Operating principle

The operation of the new Coanda classifiers is based on the physical effect of the same name. This means that air flowing at the right velocity and having the right pressure will follow a contiguous surface and carry along the surrounding air. The classifier head is placed directly on top of the belt conveyor used for moving the material to be separated. To achieve a uniform inflow, the supply air flow is divided in the upper part of the air classifier, and directed towards the external walls. Blower nozzles are used to blow the air downward in a selective manner at the two lateral walls.

According to the Coanda effect, the air first follows the external walls and then the conveyor belt. The material transported on the belt is lifted up evenly and caught by the extraction system. While the lightweight fraction can be withdrawn and processed further easily, heavier material will fall back onto the conveyor belt right away.

Coanda effect as a revolutionary approach for air classification

The starting point for the new development was the well-known Coanda effect, which is already used in the construction industry or in hair dryers. The new separator uses this principle for the first time for the separation of light and heavy materials in the disposal and recycling sector. In contrast to existing concepts, the material flow is not “through the air/material” but along the existing surfaces in the Coanda classifier. This enables very precise and targeted control and facilitates material separation.

Honored - our Coanda classifier is Thuringian Innovation Award Winner 2024

The “Innovationspreis Thüringen” - the Thuringian Innovation Award - is one of the most highly endowed state innovation awards in Germany. Organized by the Foundation for Technology, Innovation and Research Thuringia (STIFT), outstanding innovations made in Thuringia have been awarded in four categories since 1994.

The S&B Coanda classifier impressed the jury in the “Industry and Materials” category in three ways: the high purity levels, the significantly lower energy requirements and the flexible application and installation options were decisive aspects for the award
